Meet Tom Stewart. You may not have had the opportunity to talk to him much. He's a back row kind of guy, who scoots off after church. He is not a real "people person", and even describes himself as a total introvert. However, God has chosen to use this kind and quiet man in big ways to minister to so many people, from within the walls of Shiloh to a shanty town in Mexico.
This mission trip is something very close to Tom's heart. In fact, when Tom and his family were visiting Shiloh, when the church was brand new, he approached pastor Steve and asked him what he thought about the possibility of our church going to Mexico to build homes for the homeless. Steve's answer was quick, "so when do we go?" After hearing that response, Tom felt affirmed that Shiloh was the place for him.
Ironically, years ago when a pastor from a former church asked him to go to Mexico, Tom said no. He was not the kind of guy to really get involved, and he thought it just wasn't his thing. Well this pastor didn't forget about Tom and asked him again the next year. He somewhat reluctantly agreed to give it a try. In doing so, he discovered his passion and so began for him what he describes as a "journey of a lifetime".
"Its hard to explain," says Tom. "People really have to experience it for themselves to understand what it is like. But to see the emotion and greatfulness for four walls and a roof is unbelieveable."
Not only is it a blessing to help the Mexican families, but Tom has enjoyed watching how God has grown this ministry and touch lives within Shiloh. "I have never had to "sell" this trip. It's contagious through the testimony and excitement of those who have been. The first year there were 8 or 9 people, and last year it was up to 47 people." Things like prayer partners and sponsors have strengthened the ministry and allowed the congregation to participate while never physically going anywhere.
Both Steve Cray and Len Gelardi have been on the Mexico team with Tom and this is what they have to say about him.
" Tom has always had 100% trust in God about Mexico, even when things go wrong....It is an encouragement to me to watch his steadfast faith. We all have potential if we step out andtrust God.Tom is an example of that." says Len.
"Tom is not your typical leader," comments Steve Cray. "In fact, usually there is someone else doing the talking and giving directions, yet everyone knows he is the leader....He leads from his heart with a quiet strength."
Everyone has a calling, and Tom is thankful for his, "I was a man without a story, and then God gave me one. Now thats a God story."
